This post provides a brief introduction to the form and structure of Malay drama. It will look at some elements of Indonesian and Malaysian drama and theatre and discuss pre-Islamic influences on the development of vernacular dramas in Indonesia and Malaysia, with special reference to their musical traditions. The Indonesian word for drama, "sinetron", is derived from two words: ‘drama’ (as in dramatic) and ‘transistor’ (radio transmitter). This reflects its Western roots (in the sense that sinetron is known as 'TV soap opera'). Malaysian vernacular drama is known as "dakwah reog". It is usually performed by a group of players in makeshift costumes, accompanied by drumming. The term 'Reog' comes from the Latin word 'rogare' which means to ask in order to show respect. When there are special programmes, usually at night, in the Malay community, this Malay drama is usually performed. This kind of Malay drama was first introduced by Syed bin Abdullah Zuhdi (Kuasa) and was refined by the Terengganu Sultanate for entertainment purposes and as a medium for Lampung: Dakwah. Initially, the concept of drama in Indonesia was introduced by the Taman Siti Nurhaliza in Semarang. This artist's group called "Taman Mini Sinetron" ("Mini TV Theatre") was founded in 2004 by Syarif Lubis, who is also a film director. This group produced national television dramas that were intended to influence society through entertainment, education and community relations. The style of this drama is very simple and conservative. Most of the characters' names are put in phonetic Indonesian script. They are usually called after their roles, not by their real names or nicknames. This leads to them being easily identifiable on television, even if they played different roles previously. Reog is a type of Malay theatre, which is a traditional performance found in South East Asia. Usually it is performed by "Gambus" (percussion ensembles) and Reog performers. Gambus players provide the music that accompany the dance and dialogue of the show. The dance and dialogue presented in Reog can be based on any stories like Hikayat, Sejarah etc., but mostly they are local stories made up by the people or teachers who want to express something specific or simply to entertain. 'Reog' or 'dakwah reog' is a form of Malay theatre which was introduced with the aim to educate people about Islam. It is commonly performed by "Gambus" (percussion ensembles) and Reog performers. Gambus players provide the music that accompany the dance and dialogue of the show, while the Reog performers act out on stage. Most people believe that this form of theatre can help to change some bad habits in people's behaviour like drinking, smoking, gambling etc.. cfa1e77820
